Innovative Learning Environments
Fri Feb. 26th 2016
Over the coming year Hillsborough Primary School is embarking on the first stage of a classroom modernisation project that will affect rooms 1-5. This project has been in the planning stages for the last 18 months and construction work will soon begin.
It's an exciting project that will see us develop these classrooms into what are referred to as MLEs or 'Modern Learning Environments' - flexible learning spaces that reflect the Ministry's desire for schools to have vibrant, well connected, innovative spaces that encourage and support many different types of learning. The board and senior management have worked closely with our architects and project management team to get this right: visiting many other schools and undertaking research to find what has worked and what hasn't, working with teachers on their professional development, and engaging with the Ministry of Education to ensure we've got the right plan.
The design and educational thinking behind the new classrooms is substantial, and you can find out more on the MOE website, here:http://www.education.govt.nz/school/property/state-schools/design-standards/flexible-learning-spaces/
The project will be in 2 phases, rooms 3,4 & 5 being upgraded in term 1, with rooms 1 & 2 to follow in term 2.
Other classrooms will be upgraded in the future as funding allows, as part of a larger plan to upgrade all of our facilities.
The school management is happy to answer any questions - and to make this easier we encourage you to send them in by email to:
We'll then post a Question and answer on the school website.
We have a safety plan in place, and although construction projects always create some inconvenience, we'll be doing our best to keep this to a minimum. We can't wait to share these finished classrooms with you, and to see our kids thriving in these new spaces!
